Is Your Blog Theme Kosher?
A recent article at Weblog Tools Collection about the Theme Repository surfaced today, that brought to mind, how safe is my own themes?
There was some controversy awhile back, where some themes had ‘bad code’ inside, that either had adsense links for the site hosting the download, or worse malacious code as well.
Problem with all this, is how do you know? I mean seriously, we put a lot of trust in some of these sites, and I haven’t a clue how to check. Well okay I do, you need to examine the php pages, to find urls embedded in them for the adsense stuff. Usually its a simple link, though I did find a javascript code, and when I tried to remove it, the theme stopped working.
Nice.
So I turfed it, but when you like to tinker with different themes, or run various blogs, unless you get them custom built, it is a bitch. Bottom line is to download from the author’s page, as most are honest and don’t slip in unwanted code. The other is to use the Wordpress Repository, though it sure hasn’t been updated in months.
