Trade Show Events, Value?

It is interesting to note, that the Gay AVN Retreat just wrapped up in San Diego I believe, and there are tons of threads on the gay forums. Everyone is glad handing everyone else, posting pics and all extolling the great time they all had. There is the occassional reference to business done, accomplished, but not much. Each show has its panels, its teaching seminars to help the newbie, from the hardened pro’s and yet rarely is there much said about them.

Generally what I have seen mentioned in over ten years in this business, is that the panels were poorly attended, or panelists failed to show up, or it was mostly about promoting their own programs, rather than providing any significant help. There are some who say different, but they seem to be the minority.

For example, the discussions on 2257. There really hasn’t been much mentioned about the last few shows and what the panel came up with. Some implied it was more about supporting the FSC, while others didn’t attend due to hangovers. Then there are the seminars on SE, on Design, and Marketing. Again very little is said about what goes on there, but boy is there a lot said about the great parties, how the drinks and entertainment were super.

Makes you wonder, are the shows really about doing business or about having a party?
