Webmaster Overload
Being a webmaster is not an easy task. There is so much we have to know, to understand, that at times it can feel like our heads will burst with all the things needing to be done. I feel that way 24/7, or so it seems.
Problem is, that is what being your own boss means.
So many enter this field, believing that it is an answer to their prayers. That it is the cure for having a boss that is demanding, that is a better way of having a job that is more rewarding to them, without the headaches their 9 to 5 job currently gives them.
Boy Are They Wrong !
While being an adult webmaster, or any ‘business type‘ webmaster, the task is not simple. Those ads or people who tell you it only takes a few hours a day to make tens of thousand of dollars each month are basically full of shit. Eventually you can, perhaps, limit your work load, as you grow, but like any business you start up, there is a huge learning curve, and a huge amount of responsibility.
Many will say, you don’t need to know HTML, you can hire a programmer for all that, or buy a design so you don’t need to know, or have, any graphic skills. Don’t worry about SEO because you can hire someone, or my favorite response… ‘just add some text‘ which really is a joke. Then there is the traffic aspect, well you can go buy some is generally one answer. Having content is usually solved by ‘downloading some sponsor provided images, videos‘ so again nothing for you to worry about. WRONG!
- HTML ยป You don’t have to be a genius at it, but you do need to know the basics. It really doesn’t matter if you buy one of those rip off out of the box type sites or have a really expensive designer build you a site, you still need to know the basics.
- You can’t go around calling up the designer or paying someone else to make a change here and there. Say swap out an unproductive sponsor’s links, as an example. If you have no HTML knowledge, you won’t even know what to look for. So, yes you DO NEED to know the basics.
- Knowing the basics will allow YOU to easily add or delete unnecessary links, or adjust anchor text. Course that means you have to know what an Anchor Link is.
Got you thinking? More tomorrow.
