It Has Arrived - Wordpress 2.3 That is

Not even a day, and already a lot of buzz surrounding the release of Wordpress 2.3. IT is a rather major upgrade, and I have to give it to the folks behind this upgrade. They do seem on top of things, with some really helpful suggestions.

To begin with I am not upgrading my blogs. Least not until cPanel shows it, because frankly I am not a geek or techie. I have too much invested in my blogs, to try this solo, at least right now.

Keep in mind, this upgrade may make some themes not work, some plug-ins break, so before you rush out to upgrade, check all the sources you can. Make sure, very sure, that you have FULLY BACKED UP YOUR BLOG prior to even thinking of doing the upgrade.

Wordpress has a ‘Plug In Compatibility‘ listing. CHECK IT FIRST.

There is also a ‘Theme Compatibility‘ listing. CHECK IT FIRST TOO.

Why the fuss you ask? Well this new version uses the database differently. It makes some changes that effect how things are displayed, recorded, and a whole bunch of other stuff I really do not understand. Like I said, I am not a techie. What I do know is that if you rely on your blog for traffic, for sales, don’t get impatient, don’t be like a kid in a candy shop sampling everything. IT could mean more than a trip to the dentist.

An important lesson I learned, is that jumping on the bandwagon early can lead to a ton of extra work. It can harm your business if things are broken, and unless you are really good at solving issues on the fly, running for the latest version could be disastrous. More importantly, rushing ahead, without knowing the details, can be worse than walking across the street at rush hour while reading a book.

I am waiting, not easy to do either as I have a project that I want to use a blog with. It is hard to not just rush out and download the new version, upload it and play. However, I am trying to not rush, so that future upgrades will be painless, as well as to insure that any bugs are corrected before I start.

Check the compatibility listings, upload the latest versions that are cleared to work with 2.3. Keep them in a separate folder until you are fully ready to upgrade your blog. DO NOT RUSH.

I also check these blogs/sites for news, other than the official wordpress site.
