Over on the adult side of things, the question pops up every now and then, if one should include their personal opinions on their sites. It is a tough question, but then again, is it?
When you go shopping at Wal Mart, do you expect to have a sales person describe why you should perhaps consider joining the Republican Party or the Democrat Party? You are there to shop, not be inundated with political rhetoric.
What about Religion?
I think that basically, one has to decide what it is they are doing. If you are selling goods, mainstream or adult, that is your focus, and if you stray from your focus, well, you aren’t going to make a lot of money. The goal is to sell, isn’t it? So mixing politics and religion into your store, well, it could limit your customer base.
So what do you do if you have strong opinions?
Now I have strong views, and I am an adult webmaster, but frankly the easy way for me is to have a separate blog, that is just that. Now I do promote it on my other sites, but as sort of a ‘here is some opinions, if interested‘ type approach. A simple sidebar advertisement is the best, and if they are interested, well, then it is some added traffic to my ‘opinionated site‘.
What it simply comes down to, is that too many forget that they are actually running a business, not a soapbox. Sure, one can have opinions and express them on their sites, if it is relevant to the site. Like this site is about being a webmaster, so if there is something about a government law, that impacts online business, yes an expression of opinion could be warranted. If the opinion is about some criminal act that has no bearing on being a webmaster, or is of some figure or leader, then it should be left to those sites that deal in news.
If you are selling flowers, talking about the Pope’s latest message is not a good idea. Yet if there is a new forecast about how the weather, or a new regulation discussing the transport of flowers, then sure, that could be a valid topic.
Always keep in mind, what you are doing is running a business.
