How many of you, who blog, use the ‘excerpt‘ feature in Wordpress?
You know, that little box below the write panel, that just sort of, hangs there? Do you ever wonder if it is just to balance out the admin page, or do you wonder if it has a purpose even?
Fact is, it is an underused feature of wordpress, that can be most valuable for your SE use. They also provide an excellent ’summary’ of the post, which is not the first 55 lines of it. When you think of it, using automatic summaries (which is the first 55 lines, usually) you aren’t creating a summary, but an introduction.
In addition, it isn’t helping your SEO very much.
A custom excerpt does, because it uses words that describe the post, and aren’t taken from the post. It adds to the support of your title, when picked up by the Search Engines. Plus, it helps the customer, to get a quick easy to follow snippet of what the post is about.
Not all themes use the excerpt, but you can add them to your front page. I haven’t worked it out for this theme yet, but then again, this theme is not what I call ‘Blond Friendly‘ and I am really blond.
