One of the biggest benefits of using Wordpress, is the free themes, along with the free plugins that help make Wordpress a super platform to design and run your online empire.  Least, that is what they say, but you know, you get what you pay for.

Blog Themes are FREE and PAID. Yes, Wordpress has some ‘premium’ themes that you pay for, and supposedly get support for any problems you encounter as you build your online empire. Problem is, I use both, paid and free, and you know, support is something I think no one truly understands.

Take this site, and the new theme it is sporting. Looks rather nice, but it has taken me three days of hair pulling, to get it working.

To begin with, in php it seems that you can’t have spaces at the top of your page, and guess what, in a few of the more ‘important php pages’ of this theme, there were spaces.

Lesson #1.  Know a bit about the language being used to build your site, whether it is HTML, PHP, or whatever. Failure to know some basic rules, can lead to days of frustration, to even out of pocket expenses.

Fortunately I also learned a bit of CSS (cascading style sheets) so I could follow the layout used. What it turns out is that whoever designed this theme, failed to follow the same ‘naming convention’ for an important class, used in the sidebar.

I also suspect that part of the problems we encountered with the site, was due to my pigheaded desire to use this theme. While it is a ‘free‘ theme, what was my three days of pissing around cost?

So yes, this was free, but it cost me three days and time is more valuable in this business than money. If you waste three days farting around with trying to find some stupid errors, well, it really isn’t free, now is it?
