I am not the best person to talk about ‘edits‘ but you know, I am finding some interesting errors in reading up on this stuff, not to mention some glaring absences. Seriously, I rarely edit my own stuff, because I am always rushing around, and figure that my spell checker is good enough.
Course, the problem with that, is when you miss a letter, and the remaining result is a valid word, it doesn’t flag the word. Man can that screw a guy up, but I don’t have a staff of people to go through all my writing, and well you would think that those who produce these ‘dummies‘ books do.
Or do they?
I keep getting confused because they show you various examples. Couple of them, show 3 samples, and yet when you look at sample 1 and sample 3 they are the same, yet output different results. LIKE HUH?
I am confused enough, and believe me, this doesn’t help much. I am so lost right now, that I am taking a break, but I am also very stubborn. It bugs me, that so much is written, charged for, and then fails to deliver. I mean how would they feel if they wanted a sex story and got a bible lesson instead?
So, now I intend to go back, re-read the stuff to try and make sense out of it all. Course it would help if the damn testing program/software was as represented. Probably is, just that I haven’t a clue on how to make it work. Then too, I suppose it is best to start off with the examples, to see exactly how the so called different samples, actually do work.
Then the big glaring absence is in configuring this XAMPP feature. Now I am looking to use this whole thing, to build my own themes, and need a good testing environment, for php & mysql, along with wordpress.
So today its taken me ages to figure out that I have to put the wordpress folder into the htdocs folder of the XAMPP directory I am using. Then too, I need to set up the database first in mysql, just like one would do on a live server. That means I need to use myphpadmin which comes with it, but again, it just seems that everything is written in Pure Geek Speak.
I suppose my bitch is, that I paid nearly $40 for this book, and it simply assumes I know geek speak, and how to configure mysql, and use it, as well as myphpadmin. Uh, if I did, why would I buy the book? It may seem common sense to toss the folder into the htdocs folder but when I used wamp, you put it in its own directly under the main folder for the program.
The book should make those distinctions, as they do recommend both programs for use.
So now I have finally gotten that setup, but when I access the blasted blog, gee, the sidebar doesn’t show up. None of it, and I haven’t a clue yet, as to why. In thinking of it, I kind of rememer that was an issue with the other program I used, in testing.
This whole process gets frustrating, because the language is so, stilted, so mysterious. It is almost as if they don’t want us common peons to learn it, or know it. It is also making this a very time consuming project.
